About the Awards
Sid Lezak Award of Excellence
Recognizes a private practitioner
In honor and memory of Sid Lezak (1924-2006), Oregon’s “Grandfather of Mediation” and Chair of the Oregon Dispute Resolution Advisory Council, who laid the foundation upon which private mediation practices could build.
Bryan Johnston Award of Excellence
Recognizes a paid mediator or staff person of a Community Dispute Resolution Center, court-connected, academic, or other public program—or to the program itself
In honor and memory of Bryan Johnston (1949-2008), Salem’s “Mr. Fix-It,” a legislator, and director of Willamette College of Law’s Center for Dispute Resolution, who was an ardent supporter of utilizing collaborative processes to solve public programs.
Shannon Stewart Award of Excellence
Recognizes a volunteer mediator at a Community Dispute Resolution Center, court-connected, academic, or other public program
In honor and memory of Shannon Stewart (1934-2003), Multnomah County’s “Mediator Mentor” as director of their court’s mediation programs, who was instrumental in codifying mediation into state law in ORS Chapter 36.
The Award recipients must:
- Be a current OMA individual member, or for Shannon Stewart nominees be a current volunteer in a program that has an OMA organizational membership
- Not currently serving on the OMA Board
- Have a practice and work reputation that are exemplary
- Have at least 5 years experience as a participant or practitioner in the mediation community
- Have made notable contributions to the services, continuation and support of the Oregon Mediation Association, or for Shannon Stewart nominees: have made notable contributions to mediation more generally
The selection of award winners will be made by the OMA Awards Committee appointed by the OMA Board of Directors. The committee will review all nominations and select recipients who best meet the above criteria.
